Describe yourself in three words?
Loving, determined, control freak.
3 tips for staying balanced?
1. Learn to listen to your body so you recognise when you're starting to get out of balance.
2. Tell people how you are really, and ask them to tell you too.
3. Making taking care of your mind your priority.
What’s you morning routine?
I practise Transcendental Meditation, do some qigong (it's a bit like tai chi, but an older and simpler form) and then drink a hot chocolate!
Why did you decide to write Brave New Girl?
I knew it was the next step after writing The Anxiety Solution. Once you've worked on your anxiety, it's time to grow your confidence. The book is about saying no, ending people pleasing and being more confident, all things I have struggled with myself and I see a lot in my clients.
Why did you decide to start Calmer You?
I had a lot of anxiety in the past. It started when I was 15, when I had a massive panic attack where I felt sure I was dying. After this experience, I didn't feel safe in my body and this triggered cycles of overthinking and panic attacks that lasted years. I finally got some help at age 25 and made a lot of progress in feeling better. I then wanted to share the things I'd learned to help other people.
When do you feel best in yourself?
After a meditation retreat. I really feel that meditation has changed my brain and made me a happier person. That being said, I also feel pretty amazing when in Tuscany, eating pasta with my friends in the sunshine.
What would you say are the primary causes of anxiety?
Things that happen to us as children play a role. Whether it's a big trauma such as abuse or smaller events such as being told off a lot or having a parent that was always working; we can interpret events in different ways. This can lead to us feeling worthless, uncertain or fearful. Another big driver of anxiety is not taking care of ourselves enough, putting too much pressure on ourselves and not switching off – something many of us do in modern life.
3 tips for finding calm?
1. Get out in nature every day, write down your thoughts, feelings and worries and be kind to yourself.
2. What would you say to your younger self?
3. You are ok, you're lovable and you're enough.
I've just gotten into going to F45 – I love how everyone high fives at the end.
'Make peace of mind your priority and organise your life around it' - a quote by Brian Tracey.
What does female empowerment mean to you?
Living our truth and our fullest potential without being held back, or holding ourselves back.
Can you tell us about one woman that’s inspired you?
My Granny, for backpacking around India at age 76 and then designing and building a house at age 80.
Ombar coco mylk chocolate buttons (but I don't feel guilty about it) and 90's Rn'B.
Green juice or cocktails?
Kombucha mocktail! I haven't had any alcohol in 11 months and it's been a game changer.
Death row dinner?
Pasta with pesto (preferably in Tuscany!)
What’s been your proudest moment to date?
Every time someone messages me to tell me The Anxiety Solution has changed their life.
