An Interview With The Founder Of Triyoga
An Interview With The Founder Of Triyoga
Jonathan Sattin is the founder and managing director of triyoga, "London's best overall yoga centre" according to Time Out. He is also the co-author of ‘Everyone Try Yoga, how to find your yoga fit’.
He discovered meditation in 1984 when he was a football-playing lawyer smoking 40 cigarettes and drinking 14 mugs of coffee a day. He gave up cigarettes, coffee and law, but kept the football. Now his focus is yoga and meditation, we caught up with him to find out more.
What motivated you to set up triyoga?
I wanted to create a place where authentic yoga, Pilates and treatments are accessible to everyone and people can lead happier and healthier lives.
How has the yoga scene in London changed since you first opened triyoga’s doors?
I wanted to create a place where authentic yoga, Pilates and treatments are accessible to everyone and people can lead happier and healthier lives.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I'm not sure I have one! If I did, ideally I would avoid looking at my emails and texts. Typically, I practise early morning meditation at home, walk my dog whatever the weather, take a yoga class and breakfast at triyoga – sounds very puritanical, I know! My afternoon is very much the same, with a walk on Primrose Hill to clear my head. The day fills up with a mix of working on our existing business in yoga, Pilates, treatments, holidays and teacher trainings. I do try and take some time in one of our centres every day, as I believe it’s important to see what is happening.
What would you say to encourage someone to try meditation who has never done it before?
Try it out! Most of us lead such stressful and external lives, there's little space in the day for “me” time. It’s important to create it: at one level, meditation is a fantastic way to de-stress. But it goes beyond that: as we turn our attention inwards, our lives can be transformed.
What is your favourite yoga pose?
My favourite changes from time to time. It used to be triangle pose but at the moment, I would choose savasana.
What inspires you most?
That moment when I see someone coming into a class at triyoga who looks stressed and tightly wound, and seeing that same person transformed after a class. My meditation teacher inspires me as well as the many teachers, therapists and staff who put their life and soul into teaching and inspiring others.
Do you believe there is a style of yoga to suit everybody?
Absolutely, and I believe that our job is to help you find it and to prepare you as you and your body change.
