With no boundaries or language barriers, running is a universal sport that can take place anywhere in the world. Keen marathon runners are beginning to swap their local city and complete 26.2 miles exploring a far-flung destination. From running through one of the great wonders to the highest marathon on earth, we’ve compiled some of the world’s most beautiful races, wanderlust guaranteed.

The Everest Marathon, Nepal

Named by the Guinness Book of World Records as ‘the highest marathon in the world’, this adventurous race takes you from 17,000 feet through Sherpa towns, the Everest National Park and past Buddhist monasteries. Including a 26 day holiday in Nepal for runners to adjust to the high altitude, this is truly a trip of a lifetime.

Big Sur International Marathon, California

California’s most beautiful drive is the route for the world’s largest rural marathon. With breath-taking Pacific Ocean views bordered by redwoods and ranches, this course may be hilly but the scenery more than makes up for the challenge.

Polar Circle Marathon, Greenland

Run on vast sheets of ice past magnificent glaciers and the soundless arctic desert during the world’s coolest marathon. Taking place in remote Greenland this challenging running event is a rare opportunity to visit one of the most remote corners of the world.

The Great Wall Marathon, China

Why walk when you can run up the Great Wall? If visiting this wonder of the world is on your bucket list then this marathon may be for you. Expect stunning 360 views of China’s stunning countryside and glimpses into stunning rural villages en route. Word of warning this course is not one for those looking for a personal best, the 5,164 steps and steep climbs can be a challenge.

Big Five Marathon, Limpopo, South Africa

A safari and race in one, run through the hills and valleys of the Entabeni Game Reserve in South Africa. A privately owned wonderland of wildlife and varied landscapes - expect to glimpse rhinos, lions and antelopes as you take on this challenging course.

Bagan Temple Marathon, Burma
