The story behind the tiger print

You may have noticed that our limited edition Christmas collection has landed with a fierce new tiger print. Designed and sketched in house, we caught up with designer Sophie to find out the story behind the print.

Sophie sketches the design you will find on the Tora Sweat

Our Autumn/Winter collection was inspired by Scandi and Japanese design, so when I was researching for this I wanted our Christmas pieces to slot in seamlessly. When I was researching the collection, I came across these amazing Japanese illustrations of tigers. Even though tigers are not native to Japan, they were a strong symbol of bravery to the samurai, so feature heavily in art, paintings and even as tattoos.

I really wanted to create a print that would be a talking point, after the success of our goats last year. So inspired by these sketches of tigers I created a moodboard combined with my own modern references. I then actually made a tiger stencil and spray painted it originally, before we decided to make it solid. This initial design formed the all-over print that you see on the Tiger Eye Seamless Base Layer and Tiger Eye Seamless Leggings. We loved this print so much that I drew the full body tiger in a stencil effect to create the same idea. This was then used in two incarnations, on the Chandrasana Leggings and Cub Printed Sweat in a more abstract design and in a really cool embroidered design on my favourite piece, the Tora Sweat
