Form Mistresses- Vogue

A new breed of female fitness mavens are changing the way we work out. Jessica Hogan finds out how.  Tamara Hill-Norton Sweaty Betty:
With her textile degree, passion for fitness and penchant for underwear, it's no surprise Tamara Hill-Norton ended up opening Sweaty Betty. After a stint designing for Knickerbox she realised just how 'male-focused and intimidating' British sportswear then was. She opened the first Sweaty Betty store (christened thus after a tipsy brainstorm with friends) in Notting Hill in 1997. Stocking luxe own-brand yoga and gym wear. It has now blossomed into 25 stores nationwide.
Sweaty Betty fact The yoga mannequins in the stores are based on Christy Turlington’s measurements.
Tamara's rules ''Set goals. This is the key to self-motivation. Last summer I challenged myself to do a triathlon. This year I am going to do it again- but faster. Be part of a community: run with your friends (or check out Sweaty Betty's running clubs online). You wont want to let them down. And feel comfortable- it's important to look and feel great to be able to strengthen muscle and mind. If you have the right kit you will feel inspired to perform.''
Workout essentials ''Our signature technical fabric, Sensitive, which is supportive and gives a tight silhouette. It lifts the bum unlike any other! What's more, it wicks away sweat and lets skin breathe. A fleece headband, running gloves, iPod holder and the open road are all you need for a great run. And Nigella Lawson's breakfast bars (from Nigella Express)- I make a batch once a week and snack on them during the day. They're a mix of oats, cranberries, coconut, nuts and seeds: the perfect heatlhy pick me-up.''
What's next? More guest-instructor programmes at the yoga studio under their Chelsea store, after recent stints by Fred Busch (Miami yoga guru) and Tracy Anderson (Gwyneth Paltrow's now famous trainer)
