Candice Kumai, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, TV host, and New York Times best-selling author of the Clean Green cookbooks franchise including Clean Green Eats and Clean Green Drinks, has been described by Elle as the 'golden girl of the wellness world'. As one of America's go-to sources on all things clean eating, her popular Instagram is a constant source of food and fitspiration. If you're not already following her, you may have seen her on screen in the US, cooking her popular recipes or as a health expert on Today, E! and the Food Network. When she's not talking all things wellness, she'll probably be found enjoying avocados, yoga, bar method, coconut or her cat, Sisi.
With a focus on eating real, good-for-you foods, Candice believes 'Food is about nourishment. Think of your body as a Maserati', she has been quoted saying: 'You wouldn’t put bad fuel into it — so why would you do the same to your body?'' To help with your post-workout fuel, Candice has shared the top five recipes everyone should try this January.
The 5 recipes everyone should try in January
My recipes are super clean, fresh and easy! Here are a few of my favourites!
Roasted Kabocha Squash Salad
This hearty, heartwarming salad is delish as a side dish or even as a full meal. It’s also a great base recipe to experiment with—feel free to swap out the quinoa with another healthy grain, like farro, freekeh, or barley. You can also swap out the kale for arugula, the apple for pear, or the pepitas for walnut or pecan pieces. Make it your own and get creative, you won't get bored with this easy meal. Try it here.
Sweet Potato + Avocado Bowl with Carrot Ginger Vinaigrette
Looking for the secret to sparkling eyes and skin? No makeup, cream, or miracle salve will nourish your eyes like the vitamin A and beta-carotene you’ll get from sweet potatoes and carrots! I love to curl up with this warm bowl of grains and root vegetables in the winter months. If you have any leftover roasted vegetables lying around, like squash or brussels sprouts, be sure to toss them in! Try it here.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake
This smoothie tastes like a milkshake, but packed full of amazing nutrition. In this Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake from Clean Green Drinks, I give you the tasty combination of natural peanut butter, antioxidant-packed cocoa powder, and Popeye’s favorite super green! You are going to be getting omegas, vitamins, and minerals all with just one touch of a button – and all the taste of a totally sinful milkshake treat. Try it here.
Vegan, Creamy Butternut Squash + Coconut Mac n’ Cheese
Think you can't eat Mac n' Cheese because it's January? Well I'm here to prove you wrong with this version from Clean Green Eats. Swapping cheese and milk for a lighter vegan alternatives and creamy squash and coconut milk, this warming dish ticks all the comfort food and taste boxes, without any of the guilt. Try it here.
My Vegan FunFetti Cake!
Yum! Can I just say this cake is to die for. It might be January but there is always time for dessert in my house, it just happens to be vegan and um… and….absolutely delicious. Made with real bananas, almond meal and coconut oil, this is a recipe people remember, because it is fun, enjoyable and made to toast to another year of clean, green foods. Try it here.
Three burning questions
Describe your morning routine?
I start my morning with a matcha with a touch of unsweetened coconut almond milk and love from my kitty Sisi. I then meditate for 30 minutes, before writing for about two hours on what I'm working on, at the moment this is content for my new book. At 11.30 after a final check of my emails, I leave for a feel good workout at Bar Method.
Your go-to workout and why?
Bar Method, which I practice 4-5 times a week, is the most effective workout for my lifestyle. + It’s not just a workout, it’s both a lifestyle and a community to me, I love the community at the Bar Method Soho that Amy, the owner has cultivated! She always makes me laugh, smile and feel-good!
I also need to do yoga to chill and feel re-connected to my spirit. Regular yoga helps me to breathe deep and get my blood flowing, I love Kula Yoga in NYC, Exhale in NYC and Core Power Yoga in Encinitas, CA.
Chocolate and Peanut Butter and Champagne (at the same time preferably). If that fails, men with tattoos.
