The recipe for success? Don’t try to be superwoman!

Achieving goals can be challenging - especially if you attempt to acheive too many at the same time...
Hi Betties!

How are the New Year’s resolutions coming along? I’m pleased to report that after deciding to lose some weight this year (a stone to be precise, and believe me, I do have it to lose after the Christmas festivities), I have hit this week’s target of shedding 2lbs and am currently feeling very positive that I can reach my goal.

Perhaps it’s because this year I am taking a different approach? Generally when it comes to setting New Year’s resolutions, I take the I-am-superwoman-and-I-can-achieve-everything stance, resolving to exercise every day, be tea-total, eat 8-a-day, be in bed by 10pm, find a new job/get a promotion, save money, not watch so much ITV2 … the list goes on. And that’s precisely where I think I’ve gone so wrong in the past.

Because when I’ve put myself under so much pressure to become the perfect woman overnight, I’ve been setting myself up for a massive fall - which can lead to feelings of failure, misery and a night on the sofa watching repeats of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Pretty Woman (on ITV2) and eating the entire contents of the fridge.

So this year, I am taking a much more reasonable approach. I only have ONE goal to focus on, and I am going to achieve this by committing to three workouts a week (no excuses!), cutting the crap from my diet, and only drinking alcohol when I’m out socialising with friends … that’s right, my fridge will be stocked with Pinot Grigio no more!

They might seem like only small adjustments to some people, but to me they are sensible and positive ones. And most importantly, I know that these changes are ones I can stick to and will still allow a little room for life’s pleasures.

Don’t get me wrong … I still have aspirations to exercise every day, have a body like Carol Vorderman when I’m her age, save money, write a novel (and possibly be tea-total), but I’m going to take it one goal at a time, and until I’ve hit my target, that’s where my focus will remain.

Which is not to suggest that you shouldn’t aim to conquer all your demons in one blast if you think you can – just that maybe you should have a look at what you’re trying to achieve, and assess whether you are doing too much to your own detriment. If so, maybe it’s time for a re-think.
