Behind the scenes with Sweaty Betty in Rio

posted on Wednesday, 6th January 2016 | find under Travel, Behind the Scenes
Welcome to Rio, the jewel of Brazil and the vibrant city that inspired the new season collection. One of Sweaty Betty Founder and Creative Director Tamara’s ‘favourite wellness capitals in the world,’ the South American city was the obvious choice to shoot the new campaign. Bustling beaches, azure waters, vibrant street murals and sixties-style beach clubs served as a beautiful background to bring new season arrivals to life. Here Tamara shares a few of her top behind-the-scenes moments of shooting in this vibrant city.

The beach is a living breathing presence in Rio, always in sight and earshot, it is a hub for endless activity and community. They live such an active life in Brazil, all the locals are constantly surfing, playing football or volleyball and enjoying the outdoors. I loved running on the beach, taking in Rio’s culture particularly at Arpoador Rock where Cariocas (locals) congregate to watch the sunset.

I was so inspired by the body confidence on display in Rio, where people seem to be really happy in their skin. This season’s silhouette sculpting pieces, cut-away styles and cropped tops fitted in perfectly amongst the self-confident inhabitants.

Despite the constant presence of the beach, Rio is not all white sands. Deeper into the city, the hillside neighbourhood of Santa Teresa offers a no less captivating scene. The bohemian spirit and 19th century mansions create a totally different vibe to the bustling beach. The colourful street murals and nearby Lapa steps served as the perfect spot to shoot our run and yoga collections.

The production team were locals, so had great knowledge of the area – they discovered a spot of hidden beauty on every corner. I loved this leafy courtyard within an everglade forest concealed at the back of an empty and derelict house. Here a Brazilian dancer bought our new collection alive as she moved amongst the tropical vines.

The structured architecture of Rio’s Museum of Modern Art served as an ideal backdrop to this season’s fashion-forward Sports Luxe collection. Built out of concrete in the 1950s, this seasons wide-leg pants, oversized jackets and off-duty dungarees came to life against the dark, structural surroundings.

Our main campaign model Karol was a selfie queen, she was constantly taking pictures in between shots amongst the beautiful scenery. On our final day we even caught this Brazilian babe Flying the British Flag. Taken on the famously body confident Ipanema beach, we added a touch of British modesty by choosing a statement all-black yoga jumpsuit over the traditional bikini and kanga (a small skirt worn around the waist) worn by Cariocas.

Wondering where to go and what to do in this vibrant city? Find Tamara’s guide below...

Stay: The Caesar Park Hotel, it’s in a great location between Copacabana and Ipanema and always lively.

Do: Stay outdoors! Rio is such an active city everyone is constantly on the move, there are even floodlights on the beach so citizens can continue to play football and surf at night. The sunsets in Rio are unmissable, head to Grumari Beach to watch it at one of the many beach shacks.
