Roller coster

posted on Thursday, 31st December 2009 | find under Tamara, Fitness

November and December have been a bit of a roller coster for me in terms of fitness.  The sinusitis I had turned out to be chronic and difficulut to get rid of, so after my doctor told me he wouldn't give me any more antibiotics I decided to try natural ways to cure it and to strenghten my immune system.  I started by seeing an ostheopath and having acupuncture treatments - I had a few needles between my eyebrows and am still not quite sure how I managed it as I've been afraid of needles since I had an accident with some running hurdles when I was 15 - (I fell down and all the spikes in my running spikes went into my leg.  I don't rememer much of what happend afterwards as I was in a state of shock but my only memories were from the hospital where the doctor was putting a big needle in my open wound).  I think the acupuncture worked by the way.  I have also been looking closely at my diet and reading articles about strengthening my immune system.

I have started drinking Manuka Honey with lemon in the mornings.  Manuka Honey has antibacterial properties.  It comes from New Zeland where beekeepers set up their hives in wild uncultiveted areas in which Manuka bushes grow.  I topped up my vitamin C intake to 1000mg.  Vitamic C helps to maintain a healthy immune system and is needed for antibody production.  it is also an important anti-oxidant together with vitamin A and E so if you are training hard it is important that you have a healthy diet.  I started to eat lots of fresh raspberries with natural yoghurt with probiotics.  Not many people know that raspberries contain a high level of salicylic acid, which is chemically similar to acetylsalicylic acid (a.k.a aspirin).  I started to burn tea tree oil in the home which I don't think my husband has appreciated it - he came in and asked one day: " What's that smell?".  The tea tree oil has beneficial medical properties- including antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal action.  Above all I decided to eliminate all suger!!!  Which was the most difficult one as anyone who knows me will tell you how much I love chocolate!  I was shocked to discover research showing that just a small amount of sugar has been proven to impair white blood cells up to 50% for a very short period of time.  The elimination of sugar from the diet can improve the immune system.

I was advised to "take it easy" until the New Year so I am looking foward to running again in 2010.  Stay healthy and have a great New Year Betties.
