You can if you think you can!
You Can If You Think You Can!
If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost,
For out in the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow's will.
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But soon or late the man who wins,
Is the man who thinks he can.

So it was the first trial for the European Championships today. I wasn't competing until 3 and it was only in Gloucester so didn't have to travel far! This is what I have been preparing for for weeks, months- the first comp. The first competition always makes me feel more edgy than usual. I start to wonder how I will fair compared to my fellow competitors, what the atmosphere will be like. Always a mixture of emotions, potential distractions and questions. One thing I have learnt to be is robust. Being able to get on with the job in hand no matter what. This was my aim today.
I arrived feeling very pretty normal! Apart from my face (which felt like it was on fire!) I was so cold!! I used the hair dryer to warm my feet up! I warmed up on the floor and was ready to go. I wore my Sweaty Betty leggings to warm up on the trampoline and despite the nerves and anxiety I was very pleased with my warm ups and ready to compete.
The first routine is called a set. In this routine you have to complete some compulsory skills in a combination of 10 skills (every routine is made up of 10 different skills). I have been working hard to improve this routine- I find this routine the most difficult to control! I completed this and got a very good score from the judges. After the first routine I was lying in joint 1st. Next is the voluntary routine. This is a harder routine of your choice. It has a difficulty score (tariff) which is then added onto the execution score (form) - so the higher the tariff with form the better! I performed this routine well and was lying in first place going into the final.
I was last to compete in the final. Feeling the pressure and struggling with outcome anxiety, I waited for my chance to compete. It seemed to go so slowly! Self belief..."the man who wins is the man who thinks he can". (Ok so i'm clearly not a man- but you get the gist!) Finally it was my turn. My last routine of the day. I recovered well after travelling the first two moves across the trampoline, and I completed the routine. I waited for the results..... I won!!! I won the first trial!I was so pleased! All the hard work put into practice. Job done. The final trial is the beginning of March, I will find out then if I have secured a place in the team for the Europeans.
