Meet the models: The faces behind the Tomboy collection

posted on Thursday, 30th July 2015 | find under Tamara

With a clear idea of the laid back character and rebellious spirit running through the Tomboy collection, it was important this season’s models captured the look and feel of every statement-making, convention-defying outfit. The resulting imagery proves every one of them rose to the occasion…

Sweaty Betty fitness model

Nadia wears Triple Jump Shorts, Cadence Run Jacket, Elite Running Belt and Asics' Gel DS Trainer NC

Meet fitness model Nadia
“Today, I’m wearing cowboy rocker boots.”

Originally from the sunnier climes of Madeira in the Mediterranean, Nadia now splits her time between London and New York. “I’m used to the cold and snow now, and I couldn’t live without the zucchini noodles and macrobiotic food of Souen in New York, on East 6th between 1st and 2nd Avenues, or The Juice Man in Leicester Square station.”

When she’s not out eating delicious, organic, vegetarian fare, you’ll find Nadia working up a sweat in Spin or Bootcamp Pilates classes at Lomax in Chelsea or pushing her sprint speeds at Barry’s Bootcamp. Next on her must-try radar is Absolute Pilates in Parsons Green.

Nadia’s look is a mix of rock ‘n’ roll with a delicate, feminine edge and boho style straight out of the 1970s: “My fashion style depends on how I’m feeling, and what’s clean!” We love that she mixes so many looks together, just like she keeps her fitness fresh with lots of different disciplines.

Sweaty Betty skateboard model

Stef wears Ditsy Luxe Top and Ditsy Luxe Leggings (coming soon)

Meet skateboard model Stefani
“I like to wear something you can cause mischief in.”

As a young girl, Stefani paid the odd visit to the local skate park, but a summer in Newquay, Cornwall was where she cemented her love for skateboarding. When she’s skating, her look is all about the blend of comfort and style; most days she’ll throw on leggings, a skater skirt or high-waisted jeans with a nice t-shirt or top.

“I really like dressing up, but I’ll always pair it with something skater. So even if I’m going on a night out, I’ll often wear trainers. A typical outfit for me is cheerleading socks, high-waisted jeans, a t-shirt or vest tucked in, and a high ponytail. And I’ll finish the look with a cap.”

Stefani’s perfect day starts with brunch (and a green tea latte) at Yumchaa in Camden, followed by a skate at House of Vans in Waterloo. To support her skating it’s important she stays in shape, which she does by following online yoga classes and the Victoria’s Secret workouts every day on blogilates.com. We love her passion, dedication and the way she fuses fashion and fitness so effortlessly.

Sweaty Betty dance model

Karis wears Passe Dance Leotard, Count Dance Crop and Chaines Leg Warmers

Meet dance model Karis
“My mum said when I reached the age of two I started dancing anywhere. It didn’t matter whether we were sitting down to dinner or out shopping.”

Karis is inspired by Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson and amazed by what incredible movers they were without having any professional training. A professional dancer herself, she has had plenty of training. Her ballet practice started at the age of three. “My mum said I should channel my energy into something more productive, which is why I started ballet so young. At six, I was spotted by the Royal Ballet and I’ve since appeared in The Nutcracker with the English National Ballet.”

As well as staying healthy and maintaining her dance training, Karis is a business woman with her own ballet school – En Avant Ballet – where she teaches adults from of all levels from beginner to advanced. When she’s not teaching, she’s motivating people to give ballet a go, through her school and via her regular female leadership column in The Guardian. “I’m writing about how exercise in the office environment can be beneficial for self-esteem, camaraderie and better health.”

During rare moments of downtime, you’ll find Karis relaxing in Holland Park or eating delicious French cuisine at Balthazar in London’s Covent Garden.

Sweaty Betty yoga model

Agi wears Salabasana 3/4 Yoga Leggings, Mukha Yoga Cami, Laya Yoga Vest and Anna Headband

Meet yoga model Agnieska
“Being a tomboy means possessing great strength in mind and body.”

While motorsports and other high-speed adventures play an important role in the Tomboy collection, this season’s yoga model Agnieska gets the greatest thrill from slowing down. “Taking your time and focusing on your breath is a great way to connect the mind and body,” she says. “The better the connection, the greater the rush from your practice.”

Agnieska’s perfect London day out is ideally a sunny one. She’ll rarely stop moving – from early morning yoga practice to cycling in the park, catching up with friends, shopping for groceries and cooking dinner for her boyfriend. And she puts plenty of thought into every ingredient. “I try to eat vegan most of the time, so that's the kind of food I prefer to cook. If I do eat eggs or cheese, I make sure I get them from organic farms I know very well.” If she’s going out for dinner, her first choice is Nopi by Ottolenghi in Soho because she loves their creative dishes.

Although yoga is her greatest love, Agnieska is also a Pilates teacher and likes to vary her personal workouts with regular swim sessions and gym-based bodyweight training. When she’s traveling, she always packs her favourite fitness essentials: her yoga mat and a weighted hula hoop.

Although she rarely indulges in big shopping sprees, Agnieska admits to regularly updating her wardrobe at Sweaty Betty.
