Saskia Gregson-Williams is the author (and chef) behind the always-inspirational Naturally Sassy blog. Here she shares seven of her top winter recipes to keep you feeling fit and well fuelled through the festive season. Don't fret - your tastebuds will still be well and truly spoiled. 

Cashew Butter and Bee Pollen Porridge
This wonderfully warming combination of Cashew Butter, Bee Pollen, Cinnamon and a sprinkle of whichever wintery topping takes your fancy (cacao nibs, goji berries or even more cinnamon!) has got to be one of the most perfect ways to fuel a cold winter morning. Why not make a huge batch for friends and family – it’s sure to be a winter winner for all!

Sassy’s winter eating tip: Winter is all about comfort foods, but don’t fret – adding delicious ingredients like cashew butter to a morning meal will mean you don’t reach for that mid-morning chocolate fix as it will keep you going all the way through till lunch time! 

Sweet Potato, Coconut, Ginger Soup
Soup is always a meal of choice during the winter months. It’s incredible to discover just how much goodness can be packed into one heart-warming bowl of soup. Even better, it’s quick and easy to make in bulk so it can set you up for the whole week! Foods like Sweet Potato make for such a wonderful base for any soup, they are also incredibly anti-inflammatory – this is extremely important for athletes and any active person to help muscle recovery. The ginger in this also carries the same anti-inflammatory properties, so after your workout this can bring incredible relief to aching muscles and joints.

Sassy’s winter eating tip: Adding ingredients like ginger to your winter meals will give you a wonderful immune-boost. Sometimes, when I need a quick energy boost, I combine pineapple and ginger for a simple shot of goodness before stepping out the door in the morning – it works, trust me!

Risotto and Cashew Cream
For a healthy and hearty meal, it doesn't get much better than risotto – especially one that is so intensely and comfortingly creamy you wouldn’t believe it could be so good for you. The cashews, which add delicious richness of the cream, provide the most wonderful kick of protein to keep your blood sugar levels balanced and your energy soaring. After a portion (or two!) of this creamy sensation, not only will your stomach be warm but your heart will be feeling just as content – this is plant-based comfort at its finest.

Sassy’s Winter eating tip: For some additional winter comfort, and for all you cheese fanatics out there, add anywhere from a tablespoon upwards of Nutritional Yeast to your meals – there will be deliciousness oozing from your meals and smiles all around!

Sweet Potato Fries with Avocado Hummus
I don’t know about you but, as the late summer evenings draw to a close and the early winter nights become the norm, the only thing on my agenda is to pop on a good film with a delicious array of finger food to share with friends. The combination of avocado hummus with sweet potato fries makes me salivate at the very thought of it – and with these two incredibly easy recipes, it is a guilt-free way of ensuring you satisfy these cravings! Avocados contain plenty of good fats keeping inflammation under control with the omega-3 helping to lubricate joints and reduce arthritis symptoms. And with the sweet potato fries to accompany the dip, you can put away your facemasks as the amazing amount of Vitamin A helps to build and maintain glowing skin. 

Sassy’s winter eating tip: Cinnamon is such a versatile ingredient – if you roast your sweet potato fries with a tablespoon of it, combined with a teaspoon of rosemary and a pinch of salt, you are left with a wintery taste you won't soon forget. 

Superfood Hot Chocolate
I don’t think there is anything more comforting than a mug of hot chocolate. I’m pretty sure it is one of life’s finest creations! I mean, who knew that ingredients like almond butter and bee pollen could be so versatile – long gone are the days where I would simply spoon out some pre-made chocolate powder while adding a dash of cow’s milk. Mini Christmas Puddings
Nothing screams Christmas quite like a Christmas pud, however it is after a rather large portion that we all seem to make our way into a short food coma right through till Boxing Day!  With this extremely scrumptious recipe, the energy-boosting goodness from the apricots, dates and almonds will most definitely help you see through the rest of this wonderful day. Sassy’s winter eating tip: Soaking your cashews for a couple hours prior to making your drizzle will create the most deliciously creamy texture for the topping of these mini puddings – be sure to lick the spoon once you’ve made it!
