L.Boogie's Guide To Prenatal Training

Six months pregnant and still a fitness inspiration, we caught up with our Soho, NY ambassador Lauren 'L.Boogie' Goldberg to find out her top tips for prenatal workouts. Renowned for her high-energy bootcamp method with its devoted New York City following of celebrities, bankers, financiers and fashion moguls, Sweaty Betty were keen to find out how her training has changed since becoming pregnant.

Hi L, congratulations on your pregnancy! 

You are now six months pregnant, and are still training! When you first found out you were expecting, how did you begin to adapt your usual workouts to remain safe during pregnancy?

I knew right away that I would continue to workout, but that my routine would slowly be modified. Prenatal training has a lot to do with what kind of shape you were in prior to becoming pregnant. Through my first trimester, my workouts remained basically the same, with 5-6 days of training per week, mixing up my workouts with spinning, weight training, cardio sprints and intervals.
How do you expect your workouts to change over the final few months of your pregnancy?

It is important to listen to your body while pregnant. If something doesn't feel right or seems too strenuous, it probably is. It's all about maintaining, modifying, and managing the proper workouts for yourself and your baby on the way. My workout routine has slowly changed from heavier weights and complex movements to exercises using my own body weight and more basic movements. No ab work should really be done after the first trimester, but planks can be done throughout.

What advice would you give a mum-to-be who is concerned about working out while pregnant?

First and foremost, I would like to stress to expectant mothers, the importance of working out. It is super beneficial during the 9 months of your pregnancy, and is extremely helpful for labour. It's also good to note that people who exercise while pregnant tend to put on less weight and find it easier to shed the pounds after delivery. Even if your workout is simply a walk on the treadmill, a prenatal yoga class or a beginners Pilates routine, it is important keep to a schedule of exercising 3-4 days a week. 

What other benefits would an expectant mother gain from exercising during pregnancy?

In my opinion, one of the main benefits of working out while pregnant is that you are more likely to experience a gradual but healthy weight gain during the pregnancy, and a quicker and more efficient weight loss after the birth. 

What are the biggest challenges of working out while pregnant? Do you have any tips to help others overcome them?

I think the biggest workout challenge for pregnant women is knowing that you are capable of more, but being forced to modify your workout. Your fitness regime is longer just about you and your health, but also about keeping your baby healthy too. I have found myself exploring new workouts such as swimming, which is excellent while pregnant as it elevates the heart rate using non-weight bearing movements. Don't be afraid to look into what's out there specifically for mothers-to-be - you may find a new interest along the way. Get referrals, ask around, and do your research. 

Have you made any changes to your diet now that you are pregnant? If so, what are they and why?

Surprisingly, my diet has pretty much remained the same. Yes, there are those random cravings of sweets but I try not to use the fact that I'm pregnant as an excuse to overindulge. Instead, I like to think that all the good nutrients that I'm putting into my body are helping and fuelling my little one. 

Do you have any other tips for staying fit and healthy during pregnancy?

I would tell anyone who is pregnant to embrace the changes in your body, and don't be afraid to keep working out along the way. A healthy heart leads to a healthy start for you and your baby.
