Style guide: How to wear oversized layers
For Sweaty Betty, outfit building is all about the silhouette. While there’s a time and place for slim-fit styling from head to toe, contrasting shapes and layering mismatching lengths can add a new dimension to your workout wardrobe and give gym bag staples extra character that transcends the studio. Our new Winter collection incorporates lots of new oversized shapes to make your everyday attire a fashion-forward work of art. Here Sweaty Betty founder and creative director Tamara shares her five favourite ways to work the trend.

1. Balance from top to bottom
Leggings are now an off-duty essential and a go-to choice from your weekday workouts to your casual weekend wear. To dress them up, Tamara recommends going big on top with a statement oversized top. To soften the silhouette, layer a fitted vest beneath larger than life tops. “This way you’ll still see your figure, so chunky cover-ups will complement your shape rather than drown it.” The Training Over Tee is an easy-wear option that is reliably comfortable whether you’re working out or lounging around. The Barbican, Stopclock Luxe Crop and Simhasana long-sleeved tops are similarly relaxed cover-ups that look best over a slim-fit vest.
2. Show some skin
Winter may be nipping at our heels, but a subtle flash of skin in just the right place is key to nailing this season’s oversized trend. “If you’re going big on top, opt for a lower neckline so your collarbone peeks out and hints at the silhouette and muscle definition concealed beneath,” says Tamara. We love the Parivrtta Yoga Gilet, which you can zip open to draw the eye in the right direction (to see more like it, click here.) Another oversized essential is the Dharana Yoga Tee, which is wearable off the shoulder and features a wide mesh panel across the neckline to show a hint of skin beneath. No, the influx of compliments is not just sheer luck.

3. Layer your leggings
Think layers only work on top? It’s time to expand your repertoire and reconsider your go-to leggings look. Tamara regularly turns heads in the office with her eccentric way of wearing harem pants over fitted leggings. To channel her style, she recommends layering the Ardha Yoga Harem Pants over the printed Chandrasana Yoga leggings for a splash of colour (and, rather conveniently, to protect those ankles from biting winter frost). Several new season trousers create a similarly tailored aesthetic within one product. Take the Arctic Luxe Insulated Pants, our faux leather Sports Luxe hero, which fits loose through the leg but has fitted cuffs to match the matte side panels for a chic take on sporty street style. The only thing more central to British heritage than tailoring is tweed, and we’ve captured the tweed aesthetic in our best-loved Tadasana Track Pants, which perfectly balances a cosy loose fit with structured style lines to create beautiful shape from all angles. “The Tadasana Pants look so smart, I often wear them with a collared shirt and pumps,” says Tamara. “It’s my favourite look for meetings.”

4. Bigger and bolder outerwear
Volume is paramount in our new season outerwear. A standout piece in the Sports Luxe range, the Explorer Luxe Softshell Parka doubles as a coat and cape – wear loose over your shoulders for an easy-wear cover-up during transitional weather, or zip it up and wear the collar high or pop up the detachable cocoon hood to lock in warmth in one swift on-trend step. Already Tamara’s favourite winter coat, the Finesse Parka from London Edit is also beautiful worn loose with the reflective panels unzipped for extra circumference and standout nighttime visibility. Best of all, it comes with a detachable belt you can cinch in at the waist for days when you prefer a more defined silhouette.
5. Accessories with extra give
Looking for a more affordable way to dabble in this season’s oversized trend? Slouchy accessories are your entry point to oversized styling, and also make for crowd-pleasing gifts for fashion and fitness enthusiasts alike. Tamara’s favourites include the Luxe Knitted Bobble Hat (which even sports an oversized bobble), Reversible Expedition Neckgaitor and Deluxe Studio Holdall. New season styles even allow you to build oversized accessories into your outfits, with both the Indulgence Tunic and Escape Luxe Jumper coming equipped with a slouchy cowl neck so you can skip the scarf.
