Did Somebody say Marathon? - To Run Long, You Gotta be Strong

posted on Tuesday, 13th April 2010 | find under Fitness
So some of you might think that training for a marathon is all about running. Sadly if you have taken this apporach you may be one of the many bookings I have for sports therapy in the run up to the marathon. Common complaints are: fatigued legs from too much running, injured legs from too much running, and tired minds from too much running. See ladies if you want to run long, you've got to run strong!! We could almost turn that into a song darlings...drop the beat now, bom chikka, bom chikka, bom chikka, bom!! Anyways, me and my favourite girl Jess (a fellow Betty that won the SB PT comp for sessions with me) are both followers of the be strong to run long school of thought and are thus far injury-free and looking forward to the 25th!!!!!! Now I usually just train Jess, but yesterday we mixed it up a little and we trained together...here's what we did:

Warm up:

*Medicine ball dynamic movement warm up (this moves our bodies through all of its natural planes of movement, to unwind our joints from being sat down for a lot of the day)

*Single legged toe taps - to enhance balance and stimulated glute activation

*Lying leg rotations - to mobilise the spine

*Scorpions - to stimulate the whole of the posterior chain (muscles at the back of your body), and stretch the whole of the flexor chain (muscles at the front of the body)

*Reverse lunges to stimulate the glutes and stretch out the hip flexors

*Reverse lunges with a knee drive to activate the hip flexors

*Rotational lunges to get a stretch across the hips and ankles. ..and that was just our warm up!!!

1. Barbell squat and press

2. Barbell step ups

3. Barbell overhead squats

4. Barbell lunges

Four sets of six reps with 1-2 minutes rest in between

1. Squat thrusts x 10/10/10

2. Bench jumps x 10/8/6

3. Burpees x 10/8/6

Three sets with 1-2 minutes rest in between

90 second plank

We enjoyed it so much we're going to do it again this week!!! Woot woot!! Fit Girl About Town musings...
