Meet Y7 Yoga
Emily wears the Chandrasana Leggings
Sweat dripping, beat-bumping, candlelit yoga set to Drake. Sound unusual? Introducing Y7 Yoga, the brainchild of husband and wife Sarah and Mark Levy, officially one of New York's coolest studios. Offering a fresh take on traditional yoga, the studio differs from the brightly lit spaces around the city with intense, fast-paced sessions in a heated candle-lit room, with hip-hop tracks blasting from the speakers.
Described by Vogue as 'yoga for people who put on gangsta rap and handle it', Y7 provides a yoga experience to make you sweat, work your muscles and workout, with all the added spiritual benefits. There are no mirrors in these spaces, simply candlelight to encourage people to practice and not worry about what the person next to them looks like. With six studios from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, Y7 instructor Emily Torockio has exclusively shared one of their signature workouts for you to try at home. Emily is a yoga teacher and fitness instructor in New York, who when she's not teaching can be found sipping whisky from a stem glass, #balance right?
Three burning questions
Describe your morning routine?
I've never been a morning person – a fact I've finally accepted after years of thinking I might suddenly change. I mostly teach at night, so I try to set my days to start a little later so that I can wake up naturally, without an alarm. I move around slowly, alternating getting ready to go with reading snippets from the news, or whatever novel I'm in the middle of.
What's your favourite workout and why?
My workouts are all about balance and being in tune with what my mind and body need. In addition to a good sweat, I require something spiritual, this sense of being lost in connection with my own breath and self. I get that when I box and from running sprints on the treadmill, which I try to do a couple of times a week. The rest of the time, it's yoga. Y7, offers this amazing space in which I can let go, get lost, and be totally just what I need to be.
What 5 things would we always find in your fridge?
Honestly, my fridge is empty a lot. I hate cooking. I try to keep eggs, mushrooms, and tomatoes around so that I can make "omelettes" (which always turn out to be scrambled eggs because I cannot for the life of me master an omelette), and I'll usually have some yoghurt and kombucha in there. I'm grateful to live in New York, where fast, healthy foods are available in abundance for the domestically ungifted.
