Ultra Run jacket – FROM SKETCH TO STITCH

Last year outdoor runners were lusting over the Protector Jacket to shield them from the elements. For Autumn 2014, the Sweaty Betty designers have created the Ultra Run Jacket, a bold-print,  shower-proof jacket with a clever twist – it transforms into a bumbag for those rainy-sunny days, when the weather is unpredictable.

The Run Pro City Lights collection is already flying off the shelves proving that the cool, city-inspired print is a big hit. Here the designer, Lisa, shares the journey from initial sketch to the final stitch of this high-performance piece.

Lisa began designing the updated jacket by replacing the elasticated hem with a smooth, fitted waistline, so that the Ultra Run jacket sits flat over the stomach. Changing the fit with this subtle alteration created a more feminine silhouette, and avoids the problem of the jacket rising up during training.

With the task of making this jacket meet the technical demands of serious runners, as well as looking stylish during and post workout, Lisa opted for a new fabric with a soft, cottony feel that’s still lightweight and breathable. She kept the elastic binding around the cuffs and packaway hood.

An innovative modification was the addition of a pocket on the back that turns into a bumbag, and stores your keys and phone. “Whenever I’m running or cycling and I have a jacket on I get hot and want to take it off but can’t keep exercising while carrying it so I thought it would be great to have a jacket that not only packs away, but that you can attach to the body without it restricting your workout,” says Lisa.

Style-wise neon pops and highlighted seamlines emphasise the standout print. “I wanted to give the customer something new and exciting,” says Lisa.
