posted on Monday, 11th May 2015 | find under
At the fore of the trend of social exercise are a number of inspiring fitness communities around the world. Offering an effective workout as well as an opportunity to cross paths with like-minded people, these are welcoming micro-societies of outgoing people who share a passion for fitness. And here to map out a handful of Sweaty Betty’s favourite communities is UK roadshow manager Becca…

Sweaty Betty fitness communities
Sweaty Betty hosts a special Lomax Chelsea class. Here the group stretches out post-workout on the Albert Bridge, London

Sweaty Betty – Global

Of course, we can’t resist starting with our own incredible community of online and in-store fitness enthusiasts. Every week we present a chance to Get Fit For Free with #TeamSB. Participate in one of 70+ classes a week across all our boutiques, including yoga, run clubs, bootcamps and all the latest workouts led by top trainers from the local area. Plus, Sweaty Betty continues to push boundaries with workshops, guest instructor events and new online workout videos by our inspirational Ambassadors.

Park Run – Global

Free 5km timed runs take place every Saturday morning in parks across the world. In the UK alone it draws tens of thousands from their beds and unites half a million members worldwide. The runs have become increasingly popular due to Park Run’s laid back approach and friendly atmosphere – keep a couple pounds in your pocket for a post-run coffee (it’s almost compulsory).

CrossFit – Global

CrossFit comprises of independent ‘boxes’ where members converge in anticipation of the next WOD (workout of the day). Combining strength training with gymnastic agility and athletic capability, CrossFit fosters its tight-knit community through serious training and friendly competition. In fact, it even has its own form of Olympics: the CrossFit Games are becoming more and more popular as they aim to find the ‘fittest on Earth’ through their gruelling challenges. Make no mistake – this is a community determined to bring out your best.

Run Dem Crew – London

This growing group describes itself as a ‘family and a community’ and meets weekly for a new adventure on the streets of London. Run Dem Crew also organises projects to support young people, with the aim to inspire the next generation to achieve a better quality of life through sport. With over 200 run club members committed to creating an enriching, compassionate and unique club, it fuses fitness with good-doing and is proud of its roots in the local community. And now the club is also taking to the water, with its recently launched Swim Dem Crew touring different baths and lidos across the city.

Secret Yoga Club – London

The Secret Yoga Club host pop-up events that combine yoga with live music and delicious, healthy food in varying, beautiful locations. These intimate, social events put yoga in the most diverse settings, from the Old Dalston Boys Club to the Tudor National Trust building of Sutton House. The evenings conclude with a nourishing supper set out on long dining tables – the post-practice buzz creates a dinner party ambiance like no other.

Sky Ride – Britain

These free group cycling sessions are organised across the UK by members of the public. Each event presenting a new organic experience and some of the country’s most scenic routes, Sky Ride’s goal is to create fun, informal cycle rides and inspire more people to improve their fitness on two wheels. There are now over 2,000 rides each week.

Serene Social – LA, NYC and London

This big city community aims to bring women together through their lifestyle membership network, pop-up events and supportive online content. Serene Social Rooftop Yoga, now in LA, NYC and most recently London, creates a blissful, collaborative experience, focusing on empowerment of like-minded women. Past locations for the events include The James Hotel in NYC and London’s Coq D’Argent. The events generally conclude with food, conversation and plans for the next high-rise yoga experience.

The Rise – NYC

The Rise is a grass roots fitness movement hosting high-energy workouts – always held outdoors at 6.30am, come rain or shine! There is no fee and no official trainers, only the enthusiastic group leaders who support the group through the circuit-like combination of exercises. The fun sessions are extremely popular and take place Monday through Friday in eclectic locations across the city.

Fit Club – LA

This high energy group invites you along to join the best workouts and social meetups in LA. Its organised events are designed to complement all round health and wellbeing. Think yoga, bootcamp and beach workouts – all rounded off with social evenings and nutritional talks. Having fun is the main priority and championed as the best way to keep motivated and surpass your goals.
