Susan Dyson, founder of fitness phenomenon Hiitgirl, leads a Guest Instructor Evening July 11. Here, she answers our questions about the programme and what inspired it. 

Tell us what’s so great about Hiitgirl?
The Hiitgirl Method was specifically designed as a result of feedback from busy women. They told us all about what works for them and what doesn't, so we were able to create an experience that ticks all their boxes. The biggest thing that keeps Hiitgirls coming back is they get amazing results without the need to spend hours in the gym. Our 30 minute workouts are tough but incredibly effective. We always mix things up so that there's always some new move or challenge. Combined with great music, inspirational trainers and the support of other Hiitgirls, the workouts are empowering and inspiring.

Why do women love it so much?
Results! In the short-term, women get a real buzz out of completing a challenging workout. After a few weeks, women start to see a real difference in the way they look and feel. They start to feel motivated more by performance and stop worrying about the number on the scales. It’s also eco-friendly, which doesn't hurt. Where possible, we avoid electronic gizmos, steel weights and other superfluous gadgets. We also have a great sense of community with the support of other Hiitgirls. We're not a boot camp and definitely not into shouting at them!

What inspired you to set it up?
Like many of my girlfriends, I was getting bored of the typical gym workout and time-consuming classes. As a busy mum to two children, I wanted the best workout in the shortest possible time. I was lucky enough to have my own studio where I could try out ideas and get feedback from friends, so we created a class that suited our busy lifestyles and gave us the workout we wanted but couldn’t find elsewhere. We received so many requests that it made perfect sense to create the Hiitgirl fitness programme.

Why did you choose to create a fitness programme just for women?
The women we spoke to all had a common thread of cancelled gym memberships, personal training failures and just a feeling of not knowing what to do next.  They wanted to connect with something designed just for the needs of women, rather than one-size-fits-all workouts. Women are bombarded with images and advice, much of it conflicting - we want to cut through all that and empower women to be the best versions of themselves, confident and comfortable with their shape, whatever that may be.

What would you say to encourage someone to try HIIT who has never done it before?
Don't jump in the deep end too soon! We encourage women to start with our Foundation Level Hiitgirl workout which introduces them to this type of training. Initially the workouts use bodyweight only and focus on fun and improvement. We use various benchmarks to let the Hiitgirls know when they're good and ready to move to the next level.

What inspires you most?
On a professional level, what inspires me is seeing women arrive wrapped in several layers of clothing with low self-esteem and poor body image transforming into empowered, confident women. It's incredible how, after a few weeks, you can see how positive they become.

When you are not teaching Hiitgirl classes what other kind of workouts do you love?
I love to run. I also try to find some inner calm with yoga and of course I practise what I preach with the Hiitgirl method!
