Motivational tip two: Keep an eye on the prize to drop a dress size

Stay focused on your goal with this practical tip...
Hey Betties,

Hope you are all well and fit?!

Today, I’d like to share a tip that was particularly useful to me when trying to drop a dress size a few years ago – and that I still employ today - which came via a personal trainer who trained me for four weeks to prove that the ‘drop a dress size’ workout plan he’d created for Health & Fitness magazine would get results for the readers.

On our first meeting, I explained to him that I really did hope the plan would work as the plan was to print untouched 'before' and 'after' pictures of me in the mag, wearing a sexy red party dress in the latter...no pressure then!

So my personal trainer told me that in the next 24-hours, I was to buy or borrow a dress that was a dress size smaller to help me focus on my goal. It didn’t have to be expensive – it was more important that the dress was of a fixed, rigid style (if it had lots of lycra in it, I might just be able to stretch it onto my body) and that it definitely didn’t fit me now. Then he told me that I was hang the said dress somewhere I would see it every day.

Being skint at the time, I had a rummage through a smaller friend’s wardrobe until I found a fitted, cotton dress with absolutely no give and a zip up the back to do it up. Not surprisingly, when I first tried it on there was a gap of about three inches at the back where the zip wouldn’t meet. At first I found that a bit scary…how was I going to fit into it in one month’s time?!

Anyway, it hung on the back of my bedroom door and was pretty much the first thing I saw in the morning and the last thing I saw at night. And amazingly, seeing it every day really did help me to focus on my goal because it proved a constant reminder of the goal I was trying to achieve. Every day it put me in a positive frame of mind for the day and encouraged me to keep exercising and follow the diet healthy eating plan I’d been given to follow.  I’d also visualise how proud and happy I would feel when I could finally zip the dress up, and how lovely it would be to go and buy a new red dress in a smaller size for the photo shoot.

Two weeks later I tried the dress on, and even though I still couldn’t do the zip up, it went up further than before and I could see an improvement in how the dress looked on. I kept training and being disciplined with my diet, and when I tried the dress on two days before the big red-dress ‘after’ photo shoot, I could do the dress up and it fitted perfectly. I can’t tell you how happy I felt, as I also knew I’d lost proper weight – there was no way this dress had enough lycra content to help me cheat the results!

So there you have it – my tip to help you get into a certain dress for an upcoming event is to find a similar item and place it somewhere where it can perpetually remind you of your goal. And it doesn’t even have to be a dress… it can be a favourite pair of skinny jeans for a hot date, a bikini for a beach holiday in a few months – anything goes.

If all else fails, you’ve been given an excuse from an ‘expert’ to go shopping. Happy days!
