#GetFit4Free Soundtrack & the Radio Producer Behind It

posted on Monday, 9th September 2013 | find under Tamara, Nutrition
As part of our #GetFit4Free campaigns, we bring the latest fitness trends and cutting-edge music into boutiques and online. This season, we've teamed up with renowned producer Dave O'Donnell, who has worked with the likes Thom Yorke and Kendrick Lamar as well as producing for BBC Radio. Here, he tells us about his inspiration for the Frame Rave playlist.

What is your background with music? How did you become a radio producer?
I got my first set of decks when I was in my teens, and have been DJing in various forms ever since. I ran club nights in Scotland whilst at university, and then moved to London and worked with labels and events in the capital before moving into music journalism and music radio. I'm glad I did, as I've had the opportunity to work with many of my musical heroes, including Thom Yorke, Richard Russell, Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar.

Why did you choose the tracks in the Frame Rave playlist?
This mix was made to work out to, so I knew it had to be very energetic with music that people would recognise and enjoy. So for me it was about combining underground artists – like Trentemoller and Breach that people might be discovering for the first time – with lively, familiar selections that please everyone. The entire mix was structured to have a warm up, a couple high energy peaks in the middle, and then a cool down at the end, which I found really useful whilst selecting the music.

What was the most challenging part of creating the mix for Frame Rave?
Dance songs often have breakdowns where there are no drums for a time, but for this mix I had re-edit tracks so they always had drums – this was a bit tricky! Also, once I'd included a Calvin Harris track I realised it had such high energy levels that the tracks around it felt flat. I had to drop some tracks and rejig a few things to maintain those levels. Although I'm not always the biggest fan of his music, it's quite impressive to realise that no other track in the mix could match the energy levels he achieves!

We are fans of getting sweaty, so we have to ask… do you work out?
Yes I do, predominantly cycling, playing football and running. I love heading out onto the London streets at night with my headphones and getting lost in some distant neighbourhood before finding my way home. That way, I always end up running further than I'd planned! I've also recently discovered the benefits of yoga, and so I do some every morning to keep my body injury-free.

What music do you like to work out to?
I really enjoy listening to rap when I'm out running, so current favourites are the recent Kanye and Kendrick Lamar albums, as well as some Danny Brown, A$AP and Drake. I'm also really into the music scene that emerged from dubstep and a fast genre called footwork, which came out of Chicago. I'd love to make you guys another mix sometime, with a underground grime-y angle, combining rap, with footwork and everything in between for the go-hard-or-go-home workout crew! It might just be me turning up to that class though…

Dave’s playlist is available throughout September as part of the #GetFit4Free Frame Rave campaign. Every week, we're choosing a favourite track to feature - let us know your favourites below or tweet @sweatybetty.
