Fitness motivation for winter: #TeamSB training tips

Now the clocks have gone back, darkness is descending even earlier and anyone planning after-work training sessions will have to be prepared for the change in conditions. But that’s never stopped #TeamSB – our ambassadors are as fit and healthy through the winter as they are through the summer. In true Sweaty Betty style, four Ambassadors lead by example and share their top tips for staying motivated after dark. 



“I have a fantastic coach who ensures I commit to our training sessions, even on those dark nights when I could easily stay at home in front of the fire,” says Oxford Ambassador Nicole Dash. “Plus, I’m a sucker for seasonal fashion so I regularly update my wardrobe with the latest reflective clothing so I look forward to wearing my favourite items.” 



Claire Watson, Bath Ambassador and founder of bathyummymummies.co.uk, looks to her music selection to pump up the tempo when the nights draw in. “I love listening to new music with a loud beat for extra enthusiasm,” she says. “I also love mood-boosting colours and mixing in lots of bright neon colours, which is also good for visibility at night.” 



Solitude is what spurs on Beaconsfield Ambassador Melissa Scott, who loves that she can exercise freely while less daring swimmers hide away for the winter. “My favourite workout entails swimming in a 25m open air pool. That may not sound tempting in the winter, but it’s always warmer in the water than it is outside, and most days I have the entire pool to myself.” 



“To self-motivate through the darker days, I do shorter mid-week sessions of 20-30 minutes and work at a higher intensity than usual. I love sprint intervals, one mile fast runs, kettlebell swings, burpees and speed skipping,” says Kensington Ambassador Gill Clegg, “Then I save my long runs and cycles for the weekend, when I can make the most of the daylight.”
