Behind the scenes in Morocco with Sweaty Betty

Designed in London, inspired by Morocco, welcome to Sweaty Betty Summer 2017. To kickstart the new season, we relocated to Marrakech for a few days. Founder and Creative Director Tamara takes you behind the scenes.

morocco behind the scenes

With the summer collection being inspired by Morocco, there was no other option of where to shoot it. After growing up in Gibraltar, where my bedroom overlooked the Atlas Mountains, I am always more than happy for an excuse to head back. So we relocated with our beautiful collection to Marrakech for a few days, bringing it to life in the desert, among palm trees and my favourite retreat, El Fenn.

Being in Morocco, it was impossible not to find amazing shoot locations. From a day in the desert with camels (more on that below), to Marrakech's streets and El Fenn's incredible courtyard, we were spoilt for choice. El Fenn was my favourite place to shoot, the rose ochre walls, beautiful tiling and tranquil pool really bought the collection to life. Sadly we weren't able to shoot in the Souk's, however, I managed to kill more than a few hours there before flying home. Lets just say our West Wittering house had an influx of Moroccan rugs.

Our model Tarah Rodgers is a New Yorker and yogi who looked amazing in the bright prints, strappy swimwear and fashion pieces throughout the collection. She was also great fun to have around, and joined the team every night for sundown cocktails.

I've worked with the photographer Julia Kennedy for the last two seasons and it's been a really natural collaboration, her images really take the collection to the next level. In fact, you wouldn't get many photographers who sit on a camel to get the perfect shot.

We stayed at the beautiful Riad Yamina, a lovingly restored riad near the Medina. After busy days on set, this was an absolute oasis of calm with a beautifully tiled courtyard with a tranquil pool surrounded by orange trees. Yamina is a former restaurateur, so it was safe to say the food was amazing. There was an array of delicious Ottolenghi-like salads on offer every night, with the most incredible flavours.
