Yoga Pose of the Week (Week 6)
Each of us have that one big fitness goal which we work towards. We also tend to have 'mini goals' such as running that extra five minutes on the treadmill or putting up our free weights by another couple of kilograms.
When I started Yoga, over 6 years ago, my first 'mini goal' was to be able to touch my toes. Then, once I had mastered that, it was to put my heels flat on the floor in a downward facing dog. As the years have gone on, I have set myself new personal challenges but have kept in mind, in true Yoga style, to take them slowly and patiently. One pose which I have always been keen to gracefully bend myself into, has been the lotus pose.
On Friday I was enjoying my daily Yoga practice at home and without thinking moved in to a half lotus pose (sat cross legged with one foot on the opposite thigh). Then, something inside me just said go for it and I lifted my other foot up on to my opposite leg and hurrah, I was in the lotus! I immediately rang my husband (who only very occasionally does Yoga but seems to master the advanced poses within seconds!) and told him. It was one of those moments which felt so good.
I think the achievement of my lotus pose is a good guide to achieving anything in life. I found that by just practicing regularly, staying focused on my goal, not over thinking it and enjoying the journey (oh and being enthusiatic which you have probably guessed by now that I am!), I mastered what I had hoped for. Which is why lotus pose is definitely a fitting yoga pose of the week.
