Tri-ing out Windsor

Following 10 weeks of pretty intense training (two hours swimming, 30 miles cycling, one spinning session and 15K run per week) my final challenge was to get up at 4am on Saturday to make the 6am start for the Windsor Triathlon.  

Disappointingly for the first time in 25 years  (thanks to this British ‘summer’) the 2012  swim was called off. Rain fall had been so excessive in the 24 hours preceding the tri that the river was flowing so fast even boats were banned. So the triathlon turned into a duathlon (run, bike, run), a real shame as I’d done a lot of open water training on the south coast in prep.

On the bright side no swimming meant I got to show off my amazing God Save the Queen track capri pants for even longer! Cheers of ‘run union jack legs’ really spurred me on although they did make me a bit of a beacon for over-taking. Numerous people delighted in telling me after the race, ‘oh I definitely over took you after 1K – you were in the red, white and blue leggings right’ – yes,  thanks!

Despite not getting to put my tri-suit to the test during the swim, it was an amazing day and well worth all the hard work in the run up. Next challenge will be a swim arond Burgh Island and a Dorney Lake tri in September - possibly the BananaMan tri with my eldest daughter - watch this space.
