The story behind the jellyfish print

You may have noticed that our new reversible collection has landed with a fierce new tiger print. Designed in house, we caught up with designer Jess to find out the story behind the print.

Our spring summer collection was inspired by a design trip to Barcelona, in particular Gaudi's architecture, which is dotted throughout the city. On the second day of our visit, we went on an amazing Gaudi walking tour, and the Casa Batlló really caught my attention. A renowned building located in the centre of Barcelona, it was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudí and is covered in incredible blue, mauve and green tiles and studded with wave-shaped balconies. When I returned to London, I was amazed how fascinated Gaudi was by nature and marine life, which inspired a lot of his work.

Coincidentally at the time, I was reading Drowned World by JG Ballard, a science fiction novel based around the future where sea levels have risen and marine life has grown to huge proportions. This combination led me to become fascinated with images of photo luminescent under water creatures. Every season, we always have a statement fun print, previously there have been goats, tigers and vegetables (yes, kale), so I thought why not jellyfish? We took these neon creatures and added them to a neutral dark blue background to ensure they pop on the Reversible Leggings and Reversible Shorts. The dark shade and mesh panels ensure that despite this print being statement it’s flattering, though if you’re print shy, they also reverse to black.
