Learning not to worry

I was going to start this blog entry with an apology for not blogging for the last couple of weeks. Then as I was about to type this I caught sight of one of my all time favourite books, Richard Carlson's 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...and it's all small stuff'. It reminded me that such a small thing like missing a couple of blog entries is not worth worrying about as I know I will catch up and no one minds once in a while!  I talked in my last blog entry about affirmations (positive words or phrases to make you feel a certain way) and the title of this book is one of the best affirmations I have come across.

Have a think about your day so far. How many things have caused you to worry, to feel negative or taken up some of your precious energy? If you find that you can count quite a few then have a think about what they are. I bet that at least 90% of them are small, insignificant and in the great scheme of your life, don't matter too much. Next time you find yourself doing this ask yourself  'will this matter a year from now?'. In most cases the answer to this is no. This doesn't mean you won't get things done, quite the opposite. You will be more effective as your energy can be put in to the things that matter rather than into worry and anxiety about the things that don't.

Richard Carlson also makes a great point in his book that your inbox is never empty. So, although you may spend your day racing around trying to get everything on your 'to do' list done so that when you have finished you can relax, you will find that you never can relax! There will always be things that you have to do and as one task gets done, another will surely come up.  It is important to learn how to relax in between doing tasks and to not worry if everything doesn't get done straight away.

So, next time you find yourself worrying about how much you have to do, what others think of you, what you look like, how many bills you have to pay, what your weight currently is (or any other worry that might pop into your mind during a day), try saying to yourself 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...and it's all small stuff'.
