Ever wondered how fitness pros got in shape and how they stay that way? Our friends at online beauty and wellness title Get The Gloss caught up with Sweaty Betty ambassador Hollie Grant, founder of The Model Method, to see how she did it.

Tell us about your fitness journey - what started it all and what got you hooked?

When I was growing up all I ever wanted to be was a Pastry Chef. Post university, I was fortunate enough to land an apprenticeship with my first choice patisserie, though this left me underweight, overworked and struggling with depression. After a year of this, I left my job and while I was working out what I wanted to do, I took a job as a receptionist at a local Pilates studio.

This was the best decision I ever made. I instantly fell in love with Reformer Pilates. I loved that it was all about looking after your body, reducing injury and strengthening your spine, and the fitness industry was full of inspiring, happy women.

Best fitness advice you've been given?

For me, technique has always been incredibly important when training. I have an over-exaggerated curvature in the lower back, which can be quite painful if my technique is poor. I love it when I hear a tip that really resonates, so for me this one is great:

When you are doing squats, lunges, glute bridges etc., you really want to use your glutes rather than your quads, by pressing your heel into the floor and lightening your toes. It sends a message up the back of the legs to fire up the glutes and it prevents the quads from taking over. I have used it ever since and it really does work.

Any big a-ha! moments along the way?

Realising that it’s not the things you do that you regret, but the things you don’t do. I’ve never gone for a run and regretted it. But I have sat at home working wishing I’d gone out when I had the chance.

What's in your workout wardrobe?

More than in my normal wardrobe! I get to the weekend and literally don’t know what to wear. I own pretty much every pair of Zero Gravity Leggings that have ever been made. I wear sports clothes for about 15 hours a day, so my leggings need to be comfy, flattering and not see through.

What’s in your gym bag?

From the weight of it, you’d think it was a kitchen sink! I commute into London from Oxford to teach and I work really long days. You'll find workout clothes - there’s always a spare set in there as they're in my bag I have no excuses. Usually a Victory Run Bra (so supportive) and a pair of Zero Gravity Leggings.

Alongside these there you'll find plenty of water, a million snack bars and superfood sachets from my Lifebox, Optrex eye drops and a good book for my commute, right now I'm reading Eat, Sweat, Play by Anna Kessel.

How do you fuel and re-fuel?

My first tip for fuel, never skip breakfast. I always have breakfast when I wake up, even at 5am and try to include plant based and animal protein. Right now I love to eat a piece of toast with good quality butter and scrambled eggs.

Post-workout, I am often rushed for time with training clients so I (literally) squeeze in a Pip & Nut almond butter sachet for instant energy. On an ideal day though i’ll take an edamame, pea and mint smash egg pot with me for after a Model Method or Power Yoga session.

What keeps you motivated and in your routine?

I always try to remind myself that it is not how I look that counts. It’s about being happy, strong, free from illness and a good person - not being skinny and hungry.

How do you stay mentally fit and strong?

By realising that mental health is as vital and important as physical health. I am kind to myself and others. I was brought up to know that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all, and I think that is really important when talking about, or to, yourself.
